Democracy

/Democracy/
noun
1. Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
2. A political or social unit that has such a government.
3. The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.
4. Majority rule.
5. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.

Today is 4th December, 2005. It is a big day for HK Democracy. A furious demonstration is held in order to fight for Democracy, "One Man One Vote" to select a Chief Executive of HK.
I took part in the demonstration and observed points of view from different authorities /organizations. Then I left questions in my mind.

1.Is all HK people/Atmosphere mature enough to hold "One Man One Vote" election? We can notice the Democracy in Taiwan, fighting in the meeting and corruption are not uncommon. The most important is "Is the candidate representative?". US has the same problem too.

2. Really all people can vote?? Is there a different b/w highly educated and non-literate people? If you don't think so, really?? If you think so, discrimination? Maybe we can use the model of US --- electoral vote. But it is really Democracy?

We should not only learn the definition of Democracy, but the behind meaning.
This is a thought provoking issue in HK. Democracy is crucial, but second thought is necessary.
